Fishing Toledo Bend...

Toledo Bend Reservoir offers wonderful fishing, camping, hiking, and outdoor activities on a lake surrounded mostly by undeveloped land, much of it timberland and much of that in Sabine National Forest.  There is a wealth of history from the time of the development of the area under the French and Spanish governments through to the present day. Historic sites and areas abound - see information on the counties / parishes surrounding the lake for detailed historic information, historic sites, etc..

Toledo Bend Reservoir Fishing Report
for
February 26, 2010

Cold and rising water, = Tough Fishing

Hello friends and fellow anglers,

Weather conditions here at Toledo bend have been cold and wet, something we haven’t seen for about 10 years.

As a mater of fact New Years Eve of 1999 was the last accumulation of snow we had.

That was until two weeks ago when we had about 4 inches of the white stuff.

Lets get to how where and what to use to catch some fish in frigid conditions.

Bass fishing the last week has been great if you are fishing areas where you can find water temps reaching the 50’s.

The water is rising and is right at 172 m. s. l. at this time.

I have been fishing the Blue Lake and San Miguel area on flats in 5 to 6 ft. depts. using spinner-baits, rattle traps, and sinkos.

I am having better success in the afternoon due to cold water temps.

Look for areas where creeks or drains feed into spawning flats and you’ll find the bass.

The key is water temperature! Bass are in the pre spawn stage and will move in and out of shallow flats looking for areas to make nest and lay eggs. You’ll catch them during this transition if you are patient and follow these suggestions. I’ve averaged 15 bass per day, some days better than others as cold fronts come and go. Big Bass of the week was just over 7 lbs.

Crappie are beginning to show up around boat docks and creek channels heading into spawning flats in 12 to 15 ft. depts. Live shiners and jigs will both work to catch them.

Like the bass they are ready to spawn but the water temp is the key.

With cold fronts and rain the water temp will be fluctuating day to day. Crappie, like bass will start to spawn in 3 to 6 ft. depths once the water temp reaches the upper 50’s and low 60’s.

Spring is almost here. I’m seeing Robins and Martin scouts while fishing and that is a good indication.

Fishing will be great in the up coming days and weeks and I’ll be catching and reporting weekly to keep you up dated.

Come join me for some exciting fishing during the spring months here at Toledo Bend. Who knows you may catch the fish of a lifetime.

Remember to be safe and courteous to others while fishing. Watch the weather this time of year and don’t take chances.

Until next time, Keep what you can use and release the rest to be caught another day.

For lake information or a guided trip give me a call or e-mail.
