Toledo Bend Reservoir Fishing Report
for
July 30, 2008
Go to school for hot summer fishing action, As July comes to an end, the fishing action is getting red hot for school bass. In the past couple of weeks, since my last report, the bass fishing for the most part has been on the up swing. Schooling bass, white and black bass has really turned up with the heat. I mean hot weather in the 100 degree range and water temp in the mid 90’s gets the bass schooling all over the lake. If you can get out in the hot part of the day from say 3:00 pm till dark you’ll see what I mean about schoolers. The lake has been generally calm during the afternoon and you can find the school bass on the ridges and flats next to deep water from the Indian Mounds on the south end of the lake to above Converse on the north end of the lake. I’ve caught lots of black bass and some whites following a simple pattern. First of all you’ll need a few basic lures; Shallow running shad colored crank baits, Texas rigged worms with light weight. Flat spoons, gold or silver, top water chuggers with the little feathers on the back treble hook and your ready to teach the school bass a thing or to while they are schooling. These are not the only lures they can be caught on but a good start so be flexible and experiment. The next thing is the location to find the school bass and as a rule shallow water next to deep water. Let me give you some examples: a sand bar off of the river channel, the mouth of a major creek, a ridge in one of the large creek channel, open flats with major sloughs, drains, and creek channels running through them. Get out and give school bass a try but bring plenty of water, lots of ice with some hand towels to cool your self off because it will be hot and you have to protect yourself against heat exhaustion. Also I want to note that in the last few weeks the lake has been being generated steady and has dropped about a foot in msl, it stands around the 170 msl. I understand the generating has stopped for now but the lake will be drawn down to around 168 msl by the fall. As for the crappie my success has been poor on the brush piles mainly due to bream in the deep brush as well. Some of the lake guides are catching fair and if crappie is what you are fishing for the only thing I can suggest is fish the deep brush piles and also fish under the Pendelton Bridge next to the pilings. 20 to 30 ft of water works best using live shiners or jigs. If you need guide service give me a call and if you go it alone please be safe and courteous to other fishermen. I will update you with another report in a couple of weeks.
